The Photographer’s Workshop Assignment: Composition on a Shoot

Part Two of my Composition Assignment for The Photographer’s Workshop was to use the principles of composition while on a family outing. For this outing, I chose my dad’s birthday (a couple of photos might look familiar). We went to Bangkok City, our favorite Thai restaurant. I got my favorite: Chicken Pad Thai, medium spicy.

My Assignment Comments: My outing was to a Thai restaurant for my Dad’s birthday. I like how the background and foreground frame my dad, putting the focus on him. And how they help tell the story. I think he’s centered enough… I guess he could be MORE centered if I framed it a bit to the left. But I think I was avoiding Isabel’s arm. So, maybe post-processing. If I put him higher in the frame, I’d get less bokeh and more cluttered table, so I think I’m okay with him being in the middle for this shot. Maybe I could have lowered him a bit to crop out the soy sauce and cups…

My Assignment Comments: I like that this has both Ryan and Isabel in it – it’s hard to get them in a shot where they are enjoying each other. I don’t like how blurry Isabel is, but I guess it puts more focus on Ryan. And at least the foreground person is more in focus. I can’t believe I took this with a shutter speed of 50 – yikes! I think I’d have removed the soy sauce bottle from the foreground. And framed the shot a little higher to include at least both of Isabel’s eyebrows and a bit more forehead… And there you have it. Week One’s Assignment is completed. 😉 Thanks in advance, Alby! Sorry it took so long!
Here are other photos I took that day but did not submit for the assignment.
