Playing with Light

After a fantastic week of lessons on lighting, I decided I wanted to play with light a bit. Isabel was dressed up after her Night of the Arts concert at school, so the timing was perfect. I did learn Isabel is not cut out to be a model – she lasted all of 15 shots before she decided she would ride bike in her dress (which I had forbidden, of course). All but two of these are straight off the camera (SOOC). The two I fixed were over exposed more than I was willing to allow. Some of the other shots could USE editing. But that’s work. And it’s the weekend. Have a great one.
I wish I had a reflector for this shot (below) to illuminate her face more and accentuate her eyes with catch lights.
Trying to take portraits of Isabel, she ditched her shoes and her dress real quick for play clothes and jumped on her bike.
I wish I had framed this higher to include the tree and less street, but – moving object, so not being picky right now. And I think this was the point where the ants started biting my stomach… I was laying on the grass. Thank goodness my NEIGHBORS aren’t photographers!

Great work, Marilou! I love these! Thanks for sharing!
I can’t wait to get out again and try photographing into the sun! These shots are so beautiful! Way to go taking that sun and owning it!
Marilou, these turned out wonderful…fabulous job! The kids…and the shoes…are adorable!
I loved all the pics! But I could be biased since they are family, but they are both beautiful and amazing kids. I do not lie 🙂
It’s great that you are starting to look at the photos knowing what you would do differently with each one…I think you are going to take off exponentially!!!
Hi Marilou! Just hopped over from the class forum. I love the shots w/ grass AND the shoes cast aside. All these shots tell me a lot about your kids–so fun! Had my 5 y.o. daughter outside today for our lighting assignment — realized I need to RELAX and let life unfold for the camera. My favorite thing about your photography? The sense of joy in your photos. Thanks for sharing life the way you *see* it!!
Val – Thank you so much!!! That is so nice for you to say. I’m loving that class. It is really hard to relax when photographing little ones because they have no attention span, and you can’t really thinking things through.
Great! I can´t wait to get out and start working on the assignments again. You did so good with these!
