Hey, Ryan, you’re six. I thought we talked about this.

Happy Birthday, Ryan! I have a bone to pick. You turned six, even though we had a deal that you would never grow up. “What? You couldn’t help it? Baloney!”
As a special birthday treat, I spiked your hair. This indulgence is typically reserved for when you get ready for school early. (Which happened three times this school year.) You love it, but it rarely lasts long.
Today, you were promoted from Kindergarten. Contrary to what you thought, that did not mean that you had to go straight to the first grade classroom. You’ve got a summer to build up to that.
You were so proud of yourself. And I was so proud of you.
Your teacher, Ms. Montero, loves you. And you have learned so much from her. You won awards for Math – Problem Solving, Reading Fluency, and Most Improved Handwriting.
After the awards and class slideshow, you went home early – you weren’t feeling 100%, so I thought it would be best to have a rest and get better fast. You had a fever the night before and put yourself to bed. At home, we played Mario Kart Wii. We sucked – coming in 11th and 12th place every time. BUT we had fun. Then, you played and had fun – while I took a million photos.
I tried to copy photos from here and failed miserably. But there were some keepers. (For my birthday I want a cool bench.) You aren’t a huge fan of sitting still for photos. I can’t blame you.
Your sister can’t resist the camera. You’re holding an Instax photo she took of us and waiting for it to appear. (“Shake it like a Polaroid picture.”)
Finally, we ate dinner at Chevy’s. We were thinking Fuddruckers, but you ruled it out once I told you that, “No, they don’t sing ‘Happy Birthday To You’ at Fuddruckers.” Apparently, that was a requirement.
Even though you turned six, when you clearly promised not to, you’re the coolest six year old I know. And I think I’ll keep ya’. We love you, Ryan. Happy Birthday!
P.S. It’s your sister’s birthday today. Don’t forget to wish her a good one, too!
